Sail the Whitsundays with GoPro

We teamed up with GoPro and local photographer James Vodicka to capture the Whitsundays through the lens of a new GoPro Hero9.

To launch the new GoProHero9 camera, GoPro created a series of adventure videos in popular Australian and New Zealand locations. Naturally, they wanted to use the stunning Whitsundays scenery as a backdrop to one of their films. 

Photographer James Vodicka and friends chartered on Whitsunday Rent a Yacht's Toy Buoy - a 44 Leopard catamaran - to sail the Whitsundays and see what the new GoPro is made of. They sailed for three nights, visiting some popular and lesser-known spots around the islands. The results is an action-packed 3 minute video - we hope you enjoy!

 

Whitsundays GoPro Itinerary

Day 1: Shute Harbour to Cairn Beach

  • Shute Harbour is where Whitsunday Rent a Yacht and Sunsail are based. It's the ideal place to charter from because it's closer to the islands - and yes, whales are often seen when you leave our jetty and head across the passage.
  • Cairn Beach is located on the western side of the northernmost tip of Whitsunday Island. It's a secluded site away from crowds with beautiful bushland ashore and a great hike up the Whitsunday Cairn track to a volcanic outcrop.

Day 2: Cairn Beach to Whitehaven

  • Tongue Bay is on route to Whitehaven and the access point to the famous Hill Inlet Lookout.  Togue Bay is also an overnight anchorage option with great snorkelling and turtle spotting.
  • Whitehaven Beach for sunset drinks. Whitehaven can be an exposed anchorage, anchoring here is recommended in East to North-West winds.

Day 3: Harold Island Mountain Climb & Chalkies

  • Harold Island is a lesser-known spot sitting just across from Whitsunday Island.  Adventure seekers will love the challenging hike up the mountain where stunning views will take your breath away.
  • Chalkies Beach is a great place for fantastic snorkelling and turtle spotting. The beach also has the same white sand as Whitehaven. Spend the night here for shelter in East to North-East winds
